Wahyu Gunawan

Artist Story
Wahyu’s visually captivating works speak of the drama in our world today. Surrealistic background serves as the stage for his fable characters, gaudy entertainers, fantasy figures to play out the spectrum of human traits & behaviour. And with a touch of fairy tale magic, he creates narrative paintings that seem to tell fantastical stories that are beyond the confines of a simple “Once upon a time…”. In the works ‘Kick East’ and ‘Invasion’, Wahyu expresses his concern on the winds of change that are sweeping across Asia today. He worries about the day when morality plays up against profit, it is profit that won with standing ovation.

Born 1975 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Wahyu enrolled in the prestigious In Indonesia Institute of Art. Upon graduation, he participated in numerous exhibitions in Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and Korea. He was of the winners of 5 Best Nokia Indonesia Art Award (2000), finalist of Jakarta Art Award (2010), and winner of Highly-Commended Award of The prestigious UOB Painting of the Year Competition in 2011. His works are coveted by collectors in Asia, Europe and America and appears regularly in international auction houses.

Aidi Yupri

Artist Story
Since young, Aidi Yupri’s father had taught him to sow, plant and take care of the different trees his plantation. Everyday, Aidi learned to hear their laments, their crying and their whimpers. But most importantly he also learned from the wisdom of nature

“The tree teaches us a lot about the essence of life. The world of trees and plants is an illuminating reality, providing the whole Earth with the necessary force of life.” said Aidi.

In his works ‘Self Reflection’, Aidi reminds all that Nature is a wonderful space of reflection and introspection. It is a mirror to view ourselves. The folded hands, gradually formed by countless alphabets, represent the deferential student who is open to learn and reflect from Nature’s teachings.

In his other work ‘The Inscription of Life’, Aidi is concern that for too long man has attempted to force nature to his will. It is vital we reflect upon our past actions and learned to work and live in harmony with Nature. Adapting from a famous verse by John F. Kennedy, Aidi espouses;

“Man should not ask how much Nature could provide for him, but ask how far he can go to preserve it”

Yuli Kodo

Artist Story
Born in the royal capital of Java, Yuli Kodo’s growing years was filled with richness of Yogyakarta’s cultural heritage and ancient pageantry. However over the years, urbanisation has led to the lost of not just green spaces but also places for children to be in touch with their culture.  In this series of work, Yuli presents traditional child’s play that is gradually disappearing. There are no playgrounds or wide front yard to engage in traditional games anymore, as people monetise their land and give their children video games as substitute for communal play. Cultural and public spaces that friends and families gather to bond have gradually made way for malls and commercial offices.

According to Yuli, we are now living in a world where people hide behind a ‘mask’ as we are connecting with each ever more so digitally and less so emotionally. And despite the growing connectivity, there is ironically greater alienation between people and their culture. Hence this signature element of people in white painted faces dominates most of the subjects in Yuli’s work.

As modernisation goes into hyper drive, more people are losing their sense of true self, and are presenting a masked persona at an ever-younger age. As one look upon Yuli’s work, this signature element began to add on new angles as one attempts to decipher the ‘masked’ message in each work.

Deddy Paw

Artist Story
Born in 1963, Deddy studied at Jakarta Arts Institute, School of Design InterStudi, Jakarta and the Pusat Grafika Indonesia. He had a successful career in the media industry before devoting his life to art. His works are based on his research on both the Bible and the Koran alike. In these, he found the apple portrayed not just as a fruit of doom, when the first couple was expelled from paradise, but also of glory, as in the story that tells of the prophet Mohammed’s daughter Fatimah az Zahra being born because of an apple from heaven. He found many other stories that feature the fruit prominently. The ‘enigmatic’ apple then became his metaphor for both universal humanity (love, passion, peace and hope) but also the negative qualities of mankind and the society.

However, Deddy is determined to transform negative energies into positive ones. When he returned to his hometown in 2006, he became aware of the significance of the Borobudur Temple. It inspired the artist to read up on Buddhism and allow the teachings to sink into his consciousness. Since then, many of his paintings have been influenced by the spirit of love and blessings, with Buddha and the apple appearing in configurations that vary from the realistic to the semi-abstract.

Krijono

Artist Story
Krijono, was born in 1951 into an artist family in Jakarta, Indonesia in 1951, his father was a painting collector who owned the Harris Art Gallery and his mother owns a batik factory. Not surprising his style has been influenced by the techniques of batik. Although batik usually uses earthen tones and subdued colours, there are some batik artists who used bright, psychedelic colours.

Krijono received his first formal training in art at the Academy of Art of Yogyakarta. He experimented with different mediums including batik, oil, acrylics and even fused traditional paintings and Kimono paintings as a batik combination whilst training in Tokyo.

His art works are often brightly coloured and expressive, just like his own larger than life personality. His dramatic and flamboyant works have been exhibited extensively around the world, including Italy and Paris. Krijono moved to Ubud in Bali and transformed his style to strong modern expression full of colours reflecting the Balinese surroundings.

Kriyono passed away at the end of November 2011.
